Let me explain for the boomers who insisted the show was trash because truth is - you didn’t hear the message because you didn’t WANT to hear the message.
Kendrick begins his entire performance by saying:
“The revolution is about to be televised you picked the RIGHT time and the WRONG guy!!!” Further warning everyone he’s about to make a bold statement with his performance.
The halftime show began with actor Samuel L. Jackson portraying Uncle Sam, introducing Lamar with the exclamation, “Salutations!” This choice set the stage for a performance that delved into themes of American identity and societal expectations.
Throughout the 13-minute set, Lamar performed several tracks with dancers dressed in red, white, and blue accompanying him, symbolizing patriotism while also highlighting the tension between national pride and criticism. Jackson’s Uncle Sam character intermittently interrupted the performance multiple times, labeling the dancers as “too loud, too reckless, too ghetto,” and was reminding Lamar to “play the game” underscoring the societal pressures to conform.
A significant moment was right before the performance of “Not Like Us,” a track known for its role in a public feud with Drake over the industry targeting underage girls. As the music begins - the music stops and Kendrick teases “I want to play their favorite song - but you know THEY love to sue” further emphasizing that the industry is threatening to keep him quiet.
Notably the lyrics of “Not Like Us” were being screamed by the crowd which consisted of:
“Say Drake, I hear you like em young
You better not ever go to cell block one
To any bitch that talk to him and they in love -
Just make sure to hide your LITTLE SISTER from him.

Further initiating Drake and many others in the industry with cases from having sexual relations with underage girls that has been kept quiet. Throughout the performance you see “Uncle Sam” come in and tell Kendrick he’s being “too loud, too reckless, too ghetto” which further adds to the fact Hollywood is keeping hush about the issues and wants these celebrities to keep quiet and just give the people the “entertainment” they want.
Throughout the dancers you see a deliberate “zoomed out” view of the stage showing the squid games set further symbolizing the rich killing the poor. The back of the stage mimicked a prison yard where the black performers harmonized while he rapped in front of the dancers lining up to capitalize a complete American flag. Symbolism here was huge.
Kendrick’s attire was deliberate and symbolic. He wore a leather bomber jacket, light denim jeans, a backward baseball cap, and a glimmering “a-minor” chain further emphasizing the pun of the music chord and affiliation of Drake and underage “minor” girls. His dancers’ red, white, and blue sweatsuits served as a subtle political statement, reflecting the performance’s exploration of American identity.
Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show was a thought-provoking performance which used his artistic expressions, lyrical depth, and symbolism to comment on the themes of identity, societal expectations, and cultural critique of African Americans, solidifying his role as a storyteller on one of the nation’s biggest stages yet many of you were unaccepting because it wasn’t “your type of music”. The truth of the matter is - you either aren’t willing to listen or you aren’t willing to care.
